Canon: Avatar: The Legend Of Korra

Canon Point: Season 1, near the end when the Equalists have launched their attack on Republic City and Korra has gone into hiding but before sneaking in to take on Amon.

History: Here

Personality: Unlike her predecessor, Avatar Aang, and many of the other Avatars that came before her, Korra has never really known a time before she was the Avatar, and this has a huge effect on her life and personality. As a foil to Aang, who started out never wanting to be the Avatar, Korra embraced the role with enthusiasm, and the title became essential to who she is as a person. On the surface, Korra is incredibly confident, jumping at the chance to show off her skills, and she is practically a prodigy at the physical aspect of bending.

With great power comes great arrogance. Early on, she seems practically fearless, taking on powerful politicians and thugs alike, and she storms into dangerous situations with hardly a second thought. Even though she means well, her status as Avatar contributes to her cocky nature, and she isn't afraid to go toe-to-toe with powerful benders or political figures. Though she means well, and she's not selfish, Korra's world view starts out pretty self-centered, believing that it is her responsibility to solve all of the problems, and blames herself when things go wrong. She's eager to dish out vigilante justice, even though it gets her in trouble with the law because of it. Having been raised under tight surveillance by the White Lotus in the Southern Water Tribe, Korra is more than a little bit sheltered and is sometimes oblivious to the habits and customs of the people in the big city or the wider world. Money isn't a thing that's ever been a worry of hers, as all of her needs have always been provided for, and when she can't afford food, she decides to fish in a pond in a park in the city- which she doesn't even consider that it could be against the rules to do such a thing.

But her role as Avatar gives Korra many deep-seated insecurities, many tied to her sense of self-worth, and often times her confidence comes as a front to hide when she's feeling afraid or weak. Since she wants nothing more than to be a great Avatar, she's extra hard on herself and has a difficult time handling her fears and weakness. When the Equalist leader, Amon, revealed his ability to take away a person's bending, Korra was terrified, because, to her, bending is her entire life and losing her bending would be the same as losing her confidence and purpose in life. It's not until later in the canon that she eventually comes to terms with the idea that she is strong because she is Korra, not because she is the Avatar. At her current point in canon, she takes her faults very personally, and her spiritual failings, including her inability to learn airbending is incredibly frustrating for her. When Tarrlok accuses her of being a “half-baked Avatar” she takes it extremely personally, and her whole demeanor changes from one of confidence, to shame. Fear has a way of pushing her into stupid, brash decisions, and she often overcompensates with bravado, jumping into dangerous situations, such as a one-on-one battle with Amon, to mask the fact that she's truly afraid of him. And while Tarrlok's extravagant gifts do nothing to sway Korra into joining his anti-Equalist taskforce, it just takes a few nosy reporters suggesting that she's afraid to get her to finally give in.

Korra has a strong sense of justice, and will not hesitate to stand up for what she thinks is right. When she overhears a group of gang members harassing a poor store owner, she's quick to intervene and take them on in a fight, even though she's outnumbered (but not outmatched). When Tarrlok's methods start to become more extreme, and she catches him profiling and arresting innocent nonbenders, she stands up against him, even when he tries to use her friends as leverage to keep her quiet and in line. Even under pressure from her friends, Korra stands fast to her convictions, and when she suspects Asami Sato's father of being in league with the Equalists, Korra pursues the investigation despite the scorn of her friends.

She's very much hot-headed and impulsive, which often gets her into trouble with friends and foes alike. She often meets aggression with aggression and butts heads with most people at one point or another. She doesn't take no for an answer easily, especially once her heart is set on something. Even under the orders of the White Lotus to stay in the Southern Water Tribe, she sneaks aboard a ship to Republic City in order to pursue her airbending training with Master Tenzin. At the same time, as bull-headed as she can be, once she cools off, it's not uncommon for her to admit when she was wrong, and otherwise make peace with the people she was once fighting with. When she takes her frustration about Airbending out on Tenzin (and the poor Airbending training device) she later seeks him out to apologize for her impatience. Even if it takes some time to cool off, Korra's apologies are genuine, heartfelt, and not given without thought.

Power & Abilities:
Bending - As Avatar, Korra is capable of bending, or manipulating, each of the four elements
Waterbending - Born of the Water Tribe, water is Korra's first element, and she is a master waterbender. Capable of manipulating water into water whips, ice, waves, and everything in between, Korra is a formidable foe. In addition, she learned waterbending healing techniques, and is capable of speeding up the healing of wounds and injuries.

Firebending - The most offensive of the four, Korra takes to firebending easily, and it is often the element she relies on the most. Her firebending mostly is used as a close-combat sort of attack.

Earthbending - With earthbending, Korra is capable of manipulating rocks and earth (creating ramps, throwing boulders, etc)

*Airbending - At this point in her canon, Korra has yet to successfully airbend, though she still has the capability, and I'd like her to be able to learn it as time goes on and she matures and grows in the game.

*The Avatar State - The strongest ability given to an Avatar is the ability to go into Avatar State. In Avatar State, Korra channels the powers of all of her past lives, and has access to incredible amounts of bending power and skills that she may not have learned yet in this lifetime. An Avatar in Avatar State is at their most powerful, and most vulnerable, since if they are killed while in the Avatar State, the reincarnation cycle will be broken.

An Avatar who has yet to master all four elements might go into the state because of physical or mental turmoil, as an unconscious defense mechanism, and has little control over what she or he does while in the Avatar State. Once she has mastered it (which she hasn't at this point in time), she would be able to fully control her Avatar State, which is pretty much hugely overpowered in epic proportions. I don't really plan on having her master the Avatar State any time soon in game, and if she ever does it would likely have to be limited by the one-mile-radius rule.

*Energybending - (I don't anticipate it coming up much) Fully realized Avatars (and Korra, eventually) have the ancient ability to bend another person's life energy, allowing them to impart knowledge instantly and removing or granting bending.

*Spiritual Skills/Medium - As the Avatar, Korra acts as the spiritual bridge between the physical world and the spiritual world, and has the ability to enter the spirit world/projecting her spirit.

*At this point in canon, Korra is kind of a spiritual dunce, and has yet to be able to use the Avatar State, Energybending, use any of the sub-sets of bending (i.e. metalbending, bloodbending, etc), or act much as a medium (she has had minimal success connecting to her past lives). Like airbending, I'd like some of these to be possibilities for something she can grow into. (In canon, she eventually learns airbending, metalbending and masters the Avatar State, she's just not there yet.)

Inventory: Nothing special, other than the clothes on her back.

Game Plan: I think a lot of how Korra reacts to the setting, and how she'll pick her side will depend largely on how each faction goes about doing things. Morally gray things can be a struggle for her, and either group being outwardly cruel to a group could easily earn her ire. That being said, she'd probably originally favor the Assets, especially if the Insurgents are taking extreme measures that cost innocent lives, though she could be swayed, should the Empire prove to be the bigger bully of the two. Mostly I anticipate a lot of flip flopping and not being totally on board with either group, even to the point of getting in trouble with one or the other by disobeying orders in favor of helping innocents caught in the middle.

Open Post/Call Me Out

Just steals this from Ambi:
leave me a prompt!!! a picture prompt, an old thread you want to follow up on, a handful of words or a "hey lets do a thread where x and y happens" or a "remember when we said we should thread x thing" or any dumb combination of the above and I will write you a starter.

canon, AUs, CDC bs, timeskips/divergences, shameless shipping, whatever.

alternately, if you're inclined, just leave me a starter instead and I will roll with it!

Muselist here. Korra is my strongest muse but I could probably be talked into playing Celes again, and I'd give the others a shot as well.
Also please feel free to ask for Korra at any stage in her development, I would really like to get a chance to play with all of the skills she never got in CDC (airbending, metalbending, avatar state BS)

❚❚❚❚❚ BASICS.

■ NAME & ID CODE: Korra | NHD-C12-KRA-152
■ CANON: Avatar: The Legend of Korra, near the end of season 1 (Episode 9, while she's captured by Tarrlok, to be specific)
■ AGE: 17
■ CURRENT TEAM & STATUS: Green | Healthy
■ LANGUAGE: Avatar-Universe-ese (Something akin to Chinese, most likely)
■ INVENTORY: Here
❚❚❚❚❚ IC.
■ PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Go for it, Korra loves hugs.
■ PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Absolutely, bring it on. Korra loves a fight so expect her to respond in kind.
Would your character die for another character currently in the game? Yes. Both close friends and potentially strangers. She definitely doesn't WANT to die, and would do everything in her power not to (which is a hell of a lot), but she's also the heroic sort who would put herself on the line for the greater good.
Would your character kill for another character currently in the game? It would probably take some doing. Unless it was a heat-of-the-moment sort of thing, she would look for any sort of answer that didn't involve killing another character.
Is your character comfortable with and/or willing to mutilate a dead recruit’s body? Not comfortable at all, though she could force her way through if it was absolutely necessary.
■ RELATIONSHIPS: Korra's a teenager who is subject to dumb teenage crushes, so it wouldn't be impossible.
■ MENTAL INFORMATION: Not much to mention here. She has a lot of inner stress about not fulfilling her role as Avatar/not living up to her own expectations.
■ MEDICAL INFORMATION: She's a martial artist and she's pretty buff and good in a fight. Healthy all-in-all.
Are they vertebrate? Yes
Is “breathing” necessary for their survival? Yes
Do they feel hunger? Yes...
How many fingers and eyes? Ten and two
■ FAVORITE SENSORY INPUT: Favorite/preferred sensory input? Sight and Touch. She likes seeing and doing.
■ OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS: Nothing too dramatic but Korra is afraid of anything that might take away her bending (especially Amon, but he's not around here)
Have they told another recruit of these triggers? Not really.
Under what circumstances will they reveal these triggers? She's not exactly hiding it, though she's not rushing to bring it up any time soon either, since she doesn't really like thinking about her own weaknesses.
■ REBELLIOUS TENDENCIES: Is your character predisposed to disobeying or rebelling against the CDC? Definitely yes. She's not always the best at listening, and besides that, she's not really into being used to destroy a bunch of worlds. That being said, she feels incredibly responsible for the safety of her world so it's a good deterrence to keep her in line for now. But given a chance, she would definitely join a fight against them.
■ ADDITIONAL PERMISSIONS: Link your additional permissions post here.

■ PLAYER: Jessa
■ PREFERRED CONTACT: PM this account! Or [plurk.com profile] celesjessa  on plurk
■ BACKTAGGING: Absolutely! I'm kind of slow so backtagging is great!
■ THREADHOPPING: Feel free
■ FOURTHWALLING: Preferably nothing that is like "you're a fictional character" sort of deal. Let me know if you want to do anything regarding this and we can discuss it. Spoiling her future i.e. potential future castmates is totally fine though.
■ ACTION VS PROSE: Action but I can do both
■ OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS: Nothing really.
■ YES/NO SCENARIOS: Basically my "No"s are the very extreme, sexual violence sort of situations. In general I'm pretty much up for anything and if you're worried something might not be alright, feel free to message me and we can talk about it.

■ ANYTHING ELSE? Not really! I play Korra from early canon, but I'm totally up to date on the series as it comes out so no worries about spoilers.
